An irrenunciable holiday is one on which most retail and commerce employees may not be required to work — shops and malls close, with exceptions such as pharmacies, petrol stations, and restaurants. In 2026 there are five: New Year's Day, Labour Day, both Fiestas Patrias days (18–19 September), and Christmas Day.
Under Ley 19.668, Saints Peter and Paul and the Meeting of Two Worlds Day move to the nearest Monday when they fall midweek, and the Evangelical Churches Day (31 October) moves to a Friday when it falls Tuesday–Thursday. In 2026 none of these moves apply: 29 June and 12 October already fall on Mondays, and 31 October is a Saturday.
