To create longer continuous breaks, the State Council designates certain weekend days as normal working days and moves their rest to the holiday period. In 2026 this produces a nine-day Spring Festival break (15–23 February, the longest to date), a five-day Labour Day break (1–5 May), and a seven-day National Day break (1–7 October) — in exchange for six working weekend days.
Under the regulation amended in late 2024, China has 13 statutory holiday days: New Year's Day (1 January), Spring Festival (16–19 February, starting on Lunar New Year's Eve), Qingming (5 April), Labour Day (1–2 May), Dragon Boat Festival (19 June), Mid-Autumn Festival (25 September), and National Day (1–3 October). The other days off in each break are adjusted rest days.
