Why do Egyptian holidays often shift to Thursday?

Egypt's weekend is Friday and Saturday. Since 2020, the Cabinet moves most national holidays that fall midweek to the nearest Thursday by decree, creating a three-day weekend — for example, in 2026, Police Day (25 January) was observed on Thursday 29 January and Labour Day (1 May, a Friday) on Thursday 7 May. Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha, and Coptic Christmas are never moved.

What is Sham El-Nessim and when was it in 2026?

Sham El-Nessim is an ancient Egyptian spring festival celebrated by all faiths on the Monday after Coptic Easter. In 2026, Coptic Easter fell on Sunday 12 April, so Sham El-Nessim was Monday 13 April — a paid holiday for both sectors.
